EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Norman Rockwell, a world renowned illustrator and a resident of Arlington until the early 1950s, painted a Saturday Evening Post cover entitled "The Babysitter"; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rockwell donated "The Babysitter" to the Taft School in 1947 in memory of Alison Pooley, a sixth grade student in 1946 who succumbed to cancer in 1947; and WHEREAS, "The Babysitter" is now an important piece of the cultural heritage of both the City of Burlington and the State of Vermont; and WHEREAS, a campaign to "Save the Babysitter" hopes to raise a $300,000 special endowment fund within the Burlington Schools Foundation to provide equal access to educational opportunity in the fine and performing arts for Burlington's school children. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Howard Dean, Governor of the State of Vermont, urge all Vermonters to support the efforts of the "Save the Babysitter" campaign. Given under my hand and the Great Seal of the State of Vermont this 24th day of October, A.D. 1996.
